Uncovering 2020 Goals
Are you in the #goalsetting squad, or do you loathe the idea of setting goals? (Is saying “squad” still a thing? Should refreshing my slang be on my goals list?)
I am a New Year goal-setting junkie. For one, I love New Year’s Eve and Day! One, it sets off the chain of all my favorite holidays. That’s right, folks; I am one of the rare birds who love Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, and Easter and do not love Halloween, Thanksgiving, or Christmas. I can’t explain myself here. I am what I am.
However, I do know I have set goals for nearly as long as I can remember. Some years I kill it; some years, I barely hit any of my goals. Either way, I do think I have accomplished some things that I would not have otherwise accomplished if I had not set those goals. (Like one year I set a goal to be more hospitable and that led to me hosting a family who was experiencing homelessness for a year. That “goal" felt very God-directed.)
This year I thought I would clue you in on some of my goals. I love reading other people’s goals — sometimes, I enjoy reading them because I am nosy, and occasionally, other people’s goals or way of setting goals is the springboard from my own yearly or monthly goals.
For my goals, I usually set goals in different areas of my life (I believe I first got this from Dave Ramsey’s The Legacy Journey). My sorority sisters can confirm that I am not a social butterfly. I can go days without speaking to a soul, so I always make sure I include “social” goals to guard against becoming a full-blown hermit. The other areas I have are health, home, spiritual, personal growth, relationships (aka social), finances, and work.
After I set my goals, I think through tactical things I can do to realize my goals. So if my goal is to strengthen my marriage, I will think of ways that I can do that and then implement those ideas throughout the year. Below, you will see that I list out my goals, and then underneath my goals are bullet points that detail how I am going to accomplish my goal.
One final note, I always begin my goal setting session by imagining, where I would like to be this time next year. I picture the shape I am in, what my relationships look like, how my business is running, etc. Then, I work backward by thinking through the things I need to do to get my life as close to my ideal picture as possible. Now, the caveat is that there has not been one year where, at the end of the year, my life looks exactly like the life I imagine at the beginning of the year. And that is okay. Most years, I make massive progress in at least one area of my life.
So without further ado, my 2020 goals.
